A Guide To Installing A New Carpet

Installing a new carpet can revitalise your space with vibrant colours, added comfort and improved acoustics. Despite the appealing outcome, the installation process may seem challenging. In this guide, we will walk you through the carpet installation process.

Preparation: The Key To Smooth Installation

A well-prepared space is the first step towards a seamless carpet installation.

Clear The Space

  • Remove Old Carpet: If there's an existing carpet, it's time to remove it. Detach it from the gripper rods, roll it up and remove the underlay.
  • Clean the Subfloor: Next, vacuum and mop the floor to remove dust and dirt. Any residues left might interfere with the adhesion of the new underlay and carpet.

Gather Your Tools

  • New Carpet and Underlay
  • Gripper Rods
  • Carpet Knife
  • Hammer
  • Knee Kicker
  • Seam Roller
  • Tape Measure

Accurate Measurements

Take precise measurements of your room and compare them to the size of your carpet.

Rolling Out The Carpet: The Installation Process

It's time to start rolling out your new carpet. Here’s a step-by-step approach:

Step 1: Gripper Rod Installation

Install gripper rods along the room's edges, leaving a small gap from the wall. The gripper rods should have their sharp points facing upwards and towards the wall, ready to grip the carpet securely.

Step 2: Underlay Placement

Roll out the underlay, cutting it to fit your room. If you have multiple pieces of underlay, join them with tape. The underlay should touch the gripper rods but not cover them.

Step 3: Position The Carpet

Roll out your new carpet, ensuring it covers the whole room with extra material to spare. Trim any significant excess but leave approximately 7–10 cm extra along the edges for any necessary adjustments.

Step 4: Secure The Carpet

Secure the carpet to the gripper rods. Starting at one corner, use the knee kicker to stretch and attach the carpet. Work your way across the room, ensuring the carpet is secure.

Step 5: Trim the Edges

After the carpet is secure, trim any excess carpet using your carpet knife. Aim for a snug fit against the wall.

Step 6: Final Touches

For the finishing touch, use a seam roller to flatten any visible seams. Lastly, go over the carpet, smoothing out any bumps and making adjustments where needed.
